Go ahead, keep trying to lose weight — we’re holding out for these promising events
There are many things to look forward to this coming year, from major sporting events to concerts to films. Considering all the possibilities, what are some things happening in the entertainment world this year that students are anticipating for?
A handful of students provided their own answers to that question by naming upcoming entertainment events in 2010 that they are excited to see.
Runnin’ Rebels
The Runnin’ Rebels (13-3) are off to an impressive start by claiming victories over two Associated Press Top 25 teams: Louisville and New Mexico.
Led by the backcourt tandem of Tre’Von Willis and Oscar Bellfield, the team hopes to continue its winning ways at its next scheduled home game taking place on Jan. 16 against Mountain West opponent Utah (8-7).
“I’m just looking forward to sporting events, like major schools coming to play here, especially the San Diego State game in basketball coming up because I am from around that area,” Noble Tucker said. “It’s kind of a school that I’ve always liked, but I want us to kick their ass.”
AFI at House of Blues
Coming to House of Blues on Jan. 31, AFI (A Fire Inside) is an American alternative rock band known for their popular singles “Girl’s Not Grey,” “The Leaving Song Pt. II” and “Miss Murder.” The band seems to have a strong following among the alternative rock crowd here in Las Vegas with tickets to this event officially sold out.
“I’m looking forward to the AFI concert at the end of this month because it’s my all-time favorite band and I’ve waited since high school to see them,” Nichole Hoza said.
NFL Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the largest and most watched American sporting event, with almost 100 million viewers in the U.S. alone last year. The football game matches up the two conference winners of the league to decide the NFL champion and the honor of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. This year’s Super Bowl is broadcasted on CBS and takes place in Miami on Feb. 7.
“I’m looking forward to the Super Bowl because it’s a fun time,” Bryanna Gabrillo said. “I want the Colts to make it because I like Peyton Manning.”
Grey’s Anatomy
In case you haven’t seen it, “Grey’s Anatomy” is the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning primetime show on ABC that is currently in its sixth season. The acclaimed medical drama revolves around interns and their supervisors. A spin-off of the series was made called “Private Practice,” and the next crossover event involving the two will broadcast on Jan. 14.
“This year, I am looking forward to the season premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ because I can’t wait to see what happens next,” Candice Hakimianpour said. “Also, because it is jointed with one of my other favorite show ‘Private Practice.’”
God of War III
“I am looking forward to the video game ‘God of War III’ for the Playstation 3 because the graphics are going to be incredible on it and the gameplay is supposed to be pretty good from the storyboards that I have seen,” Liz Heffner said. “It looks like it has a good story to it and it’ll be a really engaging game.”
“God of War III” is an action-adventure game that is part of a trilogy based on Greek mythology about a Spartan warrior named Kratos who seeks revenge on various Greek gods. This game is the conclusion to the epic series and is scheduled to be released exclusively on the PS3 sometime in March with no exact day set as of the moment.
“V”
“I would say I am pretty excited for ‘V’ to start back up in March,” Vaughn Melorum said. “It’s kind of a reworking of a 80s mini-series. The acting is really good which the 80s version wasn’t and the special effects are pretty good as well.”
The science-fiction television series is a readaptation of a 80s mini-series of the same name about an alien species arriving on earth with evil motives. ABC will resume airing new episodes on Mar. 30.
The Last Airbender
“I’m looking forward to the movie “The Last Airbender,” coming out this summer, because it was actually a children’s animation show on TV,” Joanelle Cobos said. “The movie is a live action adaption so it should either be a flop or really awesome since M. Night Shyamalan is involved.”
Based on the animated television show called “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this live-action counterpart will tell the story about a boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) who has the power to manipulate the four elements: earth, water, air and fire. He is on a journey to bring balance to a country torn apart by war. The movie will be released July 2 and also stars Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone.
The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil
“I’m probably going to see the Cirque du Soleil show ‘LOVE,” T.J. Olair said. “It’s about the Beatles and they are one of my favorite rock bands. I just like Cirque du Soleil because they do some crazy stuff and with the Beatles, then it should be some good stuff.”
The stage show features The Beatles inspired music along with artistic circus based performances. “LOVE” is shown at the Mirage in a specially designed theatre with more than 6,000 speakers and 2,000 seats.
