California artist David Adey visits Nevada for the first time

Showcasing an unfamiliar portrait of familiar materials, contemporary artist David Adey is bringing his unconventional use of multimedia to the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery, starting today.

Receiving his masters in fine arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) Adey brings a new perspective combining magazine portraits and text, electricity and colors. Featured in multiple exhibits throughout the cities of California, this is his first exhibit in Nevada.

“I want to show UNLV students to let ideas flow freely, reinvent oneself, and to use diversity to create interest through art,” Adey said.

Both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional, Adey says he draws upon influences like Donald Judd, Robert Irwin and Gordon Mata-Clark, reconstructing various multimedia to convey a message different from its original intent.

Although the association between the Strip and neon lights might be obvious, Adey said he utilizes eye-popping neon colors to draw attention to each piece.

“By referencing to the Las Vegas Strip with neon lights, Adey attracts the same attention by using different methods of showcasing his pop art,” said art director Jerry Schefcik. “Which is why we wanted to bring him to UNLV.”

Visitors can expect to see ceramics, sculptures and clipped photography throughout the exhibit. The free exhibit is open Jan. 19 – Feb. 25., Mon. through Fri. from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., as well as Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, contact Jerry Schefcik, at (702) 895-3893.
