A red Jeep owned by UNLV senior history major Ron Kirk was found on Jan. 23 at Calico Basin at the Red Rock National Conservation Area.

Kirk has been missing since Jan. 16.

Officials say the Jeep had been at the site since Jan. 20.

The last known communication from Kirk was a text message sent to his cousin on Jan. 16 that stated that he was going out for a hike.

Kirk is a former U.S. Marine, a barefoot runner and an avid outdoorsman.

“He’s a tough guy,” said Kirk’s friend Sean Owens.

He said that Kirk’s friends and family are hopeful that he has survived.

“We’ve got to be realistic though,” Owens said.

Between 400 and 450 people have joined the search effort so far. Searchers have been looking for Kirk over a 16-square-mile area every day since the Jeep was found.

“There has been a massive effort by friends of his and other people who don’t even know him,” Owens said.

The Las Vegas Hash House Harriers, a group of running enthusiasts, has lent its support to the rescue cause.

HHH members have come from around the Las Vegas Valley and from cities across California to help search the Calico Basin.

“They’ve been his brothers and sisters though this whole thing,” said Darrell Kirk, Ron Kirk’s biological brother.

Members of Kirk’s family traveled from Seattle and the family’s home town of Chicago to aid in the search.

Helicopters have scouted the area and private aircraft with high-resolution cameras have flown over the areas that are difficult to hike, taking images that searchers hope will lead them to Kirk.

Yesterday, officials brought dogs to the site to aid in the effort.

“There’s people constantly printing out maps, trying to make sure areas don’t get gone over twice, surveying all the different canyons and mountain peaks, trying to look anywhere for him,” Owens said.

Darrell Kirk said that Ron “is still out there” and that the search will continue.

“We know he’s a survivor,” Darrell Kirk said.

Ron Kirk is 46 years old and 5’9” tall and weighs 145 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes and has many tattoos.

If you have any information that may help find Ron Kirk, or to join the search effort, call Darrell Kirk at (206) 225-9770. To report information, call the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department at (702) 828-3111 and ask for Detective Roberto Juarez.
