UNLV 2 San Diego 1 (9)
UNLV Softball travelled to Santa Barbara this past weekend for the Gaucho Classic. In the first of five games UNLV played the Toreros of San Diego. The game had to be settled in extra innings when Stefany Valentino hit a game winning sacrifice fly into center field. Behind dominant pitching from Jessica O’Connor and Amanda Oliveto the Rebels held San Diego to just one run in 9 innings.
The second game was against in state rival Nevada. Amanda Oliveto made sure the Wolfpack would not get in the run column, pitching 7 shutout innings and only allowing 3 hits. The Rebels only scored one run but that did not stop Paige Emerson from getting 4 hits and scoring the winning run on an RBI from Tayler Van Acker.
UCSB 1 UNLV 0
The second day was not as kind to the Rebels as they lost to the host Gauchos. Kathryn Pilpil hit a solo HR off Oliveto in the 2nd and that’s all it took for the Gauchos to get the win. The Rebels only had 4 hits in the game with two of them coming from Stefany Valentino.
Houston 11 UNLV 7
The Rebels bats woke up in the second game but it was not enough to defeat #23 Houston. The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before UNLV began to battle back. Jaexie Balilea lead the charge with 3 RBI’s but Houston would add five more runs and hand the Rebels their second loss of the day.
UNLV 7 San Diego 3
The Rebels finished the Classic with a win over San Diego on Sunday. Stefany Valentino, who returned to play this weekend, finished with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Pauline Monreal sealed the game with a 3 run homer in the 6th inning. The Rebels finish the weekend with a 3-2 record and return to action on March 2nd in Las Vegas for the Eller Media Stadium Classic.
