Fedde named second-team All-American
UNLV right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde was named a preseason Second-Team All-American by Baseball America on Feb. 3.
“It’s a big honor,” Fedde said. “It really doesn’t get much better than this.”
Unlike other athletes that have been credited with preseason honors based on natural size and strength, the junior has worked to earn his spot. Fedde went finished 7-3 with a 3.92 ERA last year.
“Scouts love the Ve-Lo (velocity). I’ve put on about 30 pounds since I’ve been at UNLV,” Fedde said.”
Fedde earned a trip to play in the Cape Cod League, where top collegiate athletes get selected to showcase their talents in front of MLB scouts. Fedde also pitched for Team USA.
“The experience of both is unmatched,” Fedde said. “Playing for Team USA is a feeling that’s tough to describe. It made me a much better player.”
There will be a lot of pressure from fans and players alike to perform this season. UNLV is playing a grueling, non-conference schedule against the likes of Tennessee, Arkansas, Arizona State (twice) and preseason No.1 Cal-State Fullerton.
Fedde acknowledges the pressure to perform is there, but said that the team is ready and willing to handle anything thrown its way.
“We’ve created a team here that’s ready to win, so we take that as a compliment,” he said. “We’ve been counting down the days on our whiteboard in the clubhouse, and on February 14, let’s see how we look.”
