EDITORIAL: Coping in a post-’Battle for Nevada’ world

At UNLV, we love our athletics. This is why, after the events of this weekend, we’ve decided to would like to tell you readers about the sport currently on everyone’s minds: basketball. That’s right.
Men’s basketball is looking to return to the top of the heap this season after a lackluster effort last season. They have a fresh new class of players that will hopefully be able to unite in ways the past teams could only dream of.
The Lady Rebels can’t be forgotten either. The team who made an incredible run for the Mountain West title last year is definitely the main Rebel athletic program on the rise.
Wait. “On the rise?” Sounds familiar.
That’s right, the “Rebels on the Rise” mantra of this season’s UNLV football team just reared its ugly head during the writing process. We had almost forgotten — there probably isn’t a Rebels fan on the planet that hasn’t also been trying to suppress the memory of the unfortunate loss to Reno this weekend.
It’s a difficult task to forget the record 63 points given up, the unfortunate performance of the run defense, the three Pack backs rushing past the 150 yard mark, the near-NCAA record 773 yards given up, the…
Sorry, got a little carried away there with the negativity.
But that’s it. What’s past is past, so before the sports section focuses on our “big game” with BYU, let’s give you some things to be pumped for when basketball season comes around: Men’s basketball’s student section.
You think you’ve seen excitement in the Sam Boyd Stadium student section? Think again. UNLV’s student section is legendary nationwide. In the 80s and early 90s, when UNLV ruled the roost in the West, the Thomas & Mack became a college basketball temple, the echoes of which resonate within its walls to this day.
Then there’s the matter of the opponents the Women’s team is facing this year — among the toughest “Rough Riders” in the NCAA.
The Mountain West is given grossly more respect in the women’s ranks and the Lady Rebels will consequently have Sweet 16 threats on a game-by-game basis. Top it off with the epic showdown with the top-three ranked UNC Lady Tar Heels and you’ve got one heck of a season to watch.
The countdown to the season is in its final two months and the fans will become increasingly optimistic as the first game approaches. But even if expectations aren’t met, always remember this: No matter how angry you get at the little (or big) disappointments along the way, our teams will always be there to raise our expectations, and on those oh-so-glorious occasions, meet them.
One of these seasons, Rebel football. One of these seasons…
