EDITORIAL: Finding a tone for our voice

It felt as if the entire world was on the side of Nevada’s students after hearing what each of the speakers had to say at the Jan. 22 rally against Gov. Jim Gibbons’ proposed budget cuts, but students cannot afford to forget that there are still opponents to the interests of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
People like Gov. Gibbons.
The rally was a great start. It raised morale for Southern Nevada, galvanizing our cause. Now it’s time to channel the energy and enthusiasm that we showed Thursday toward urging action in the rest of the state.
We must not allow ourselves to be taken in by the popular tendency to demonize the governor and treat his proposal as an act of contempt or spite for Nevada’s students. Gibbons must believe his decisions are best for the state.
Our disagreement with Gov. Gibbons must be voiced respectfully.
Certainly some supporters of Gibbons’ plan seem angry, condescending and bent on discouraging and insulting us, but we must acknowledge the arguments of some who disagree with our cause as well-reasoned.
If we want to claim that our education is worth saving, we must treat our opponents and their ideas with the professionalism of well-educated citizens. If we hope to raise concern for our cause we must act civilly, showing ourselves to be people of substance, not brats spoiled by the blessings of in-state scholarships and detached from a world of economic hardship.
We are a consolidated union of students and citizens who demand that public officials represent our best interests. We must prove that if we are angry, then we are justified in our outrage.
Our voices are growing louder. We must prove that they deserve to be amplified. Our cry for justice must be elevated from its impression of importance based on divergence from a norm of apathy. It must take on an image of value founded not on comparison to former weakness, but on significance of its own right.
The low blows being thrown at us from the governor and his supporters must be met with an attitude that reflects the weight of our beliefs.
We in the Nevada System of Higher Education are a diverse group. We are young and old, just starting our education or returning to complete it. Some of us are honing professional skills at Truckee Meadows or Great Basin and some chase the future at the Desert Research Institute. Others pursue hotel management degrees at UNLV or take English at Western Nevada. People teach courses in visual media at Nevada State and wrap up associate degrees at CSN and masters at UNR.
Our unity is a testament to the strong character of our cause, but unless we make it clear that we will allow neither to fail, critics and naysayers will diminish both.
We come from many different backgrounds and have many different goals, but we are educated and we are many.
We are Nevadans. This is the “Battle Born” state and, as Nevadans and students of this state, we aren’t going down without a fight.
