Researchers help Parkinson’s patients
January 26, 2009 by The Rebel Yell · Comments Off
A research team led by UNLV kinesiology Prof. Gabriele Wulf has shown that Parkinson’s patients can improve physical stability by focusing attention on their environment rather than on bodily movements themselves.
Two thirds of Americans living with Parkinson’s disease reported falling within the last year. Wulf and her team hope their research will help those with histories of falls live safer lives and improve rehabilitation efforts of caregivers and clinicians working with Parkinson’s patients.
Parkinson’s disease is a degeneration of the basal ganglia, the part of the brain that controls motor functions and learning. Wulf and her team contend that directing attention to the effect of movement supports a more automatic form of motor control than is usually employed by those with limited mobility.
The idea came from observing the progress of athletes like ice skaters whose skills require balance in motion. While beginners tend to adopt a stiff posture and find balance difficult, experts focus their attention away from their own bodies.
Wulf’s team’s study will appear in the February 2009 issue of the Journal of Physical Therapy.
