“To give parents confidence that their children will be safe when schools resume classroom teaching, we encourage all school staff to get vaccinated,” said Gavin Newsom.

With more than 10,000 new cases per day, ten times more than two months, the virus threatens to reopen in this most populous state in the United States, fueled by the highly contagious Delta variant.

“We will put an end to this pandemic through vaccinations. As a father, I can’t wait for the school year to start and the California kids to be back in the classrooms, ”said the Democratic governor.

The measure announced on Wednesday, which will apply to both public and private schools, has been welcomed by parent groups.

“We want to do everything we can to protect our most vulnerable children and to ensure that all children can return to school as safely as possible,” said Carol Green, president of the Teachers Parents Association of California.

“We claim educators are an important workforce,” she added.

Nearly two-thirds of California residents over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated, according to local health officials.

Children under the age of 10 have not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to receive COVID-19 vaccines.

The Pfizer / BioNTech alliance announced in May that it hopes to file an emergency approval application for its vaccine for children ages 2-11 in the United States in September.
