International troops have left Kabul airport, but many Afghans want to continue to leave. Horst Seehofer rejects specific commitments to accept refugees.
Brussels (dpa) – Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer spoke out against specific contingents for people in need of protection at a special EU meeting on developments in Afghanistan.
“I don’t think it’s very wise to talk about numbers here, because numbers naturally trigger something,” the CSU politician said in Brussels on Tuesday. We don’t want to trigger a “pull effect”.
At the same time, Seehofer pointed out that the federal government has always agreed on settlement programs for “abused people” in particular. “We are ready for this too,” he said.
The CSU politician criticized threats from his Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn to block a draft EU declaration on Afghanistan because of what he saw as insufficient support commitments. “Mr Asselborn should take a closer look at the problems facing the large countries of the European Union,” he said. We are not talking about a few hundred people here, but several thousand who are already in Germany.
“Luxembourg is still represented in very small numbers in these matters and they should be a little more attentive to the interests of the main host countries,” he added. It is also necessary to ensure that those arriving do not pose a risk to the safety of the population in Germany.
